Australia is known for its unique and diverse biodiversity, and every year we get to honour and celebrate this with National Biodiversity Month.
National Biodiversity Month promotes the importance of:
- Connecting with nature;
- Caring for nature in all its diversity – its biodiversity.
Biodiversity is valuable, and we need biodiversity. But our Australian biodiversity needs us to step up and protect it. National Biodiversity Month offers the perfect opportunity for all of us to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity and to take action to conserve and appreciate our natural world.
Here are some ways you can celebrate National Biodiversity Month.
Learn about local species
Take time to learn about the plants, animals, and ecosystems that are native to your region. Visit local wildlife reserves to gain a deeper understanding of some of the local biodiversity in your area.
Explore nature
Spend time outdoors exploring natural areas like parks, forests, wetlands, and beaches. Observe the different species of plants, birds, insects, and other wildlife that call these places their home.
Citizen science
Get involved in citizen science projects that record observations of plants, animals, and insects. Your contributions can help scientists gather valuable data about biodiversity.
Plant a native garden
If you have a garden, consider planting native plants. Native plants provide habitat and food sources for local wildlife and can help support biodiversity in your area.
Reduce your impact
Practice habits such as reducing waste and conserving water. These actions can positively impact local ecosystems and the species that rely on them. Consider calculating your carbon footprint if you want to step it up for biodiversity.
Spread awareness
Use your social media platform to share biodiversity conservation facts, articles, and resources. Help spread the word about the importance of protecting Australia’s diverse ecosystems. You can follow us on Instagram and share our posts with your networks.
Support conservation organisations
Contribute to a better tomorrow today by supporting environmental organisations making a difference. You can plant a tree with Carbon Positive Australia to get started.
But wait, there’s more!
Check out these key dates that are happening during National Biodiversity Month.
- 1 September – National Wattle Day
National Wattle Day is a day that celebrates Australia and our national floral emblem, the Golden Wattle, for which there are more than 1,073 described species. Snap a photo of Wattle in your local area and share it with us on social media. - 7 September – National Threatened Species Day
National Threatened Species Day highlights an important date in Australian history for biodiversity – the death of the last Tasmanian Tiger. While this is a sobering fact, it is a day to educate ourselves about the importance of protecting our threatened species.
