5 Key Takeaways from COP27

We were lucky to have two UN climate scientists, Dr. Bill Hare and Dr. Peter Newman, in WA last week, sharing their insights from COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, at an event hosted by WA Climate Leaders. Here are the 5 key takeaways you may want to consider in your climate action plan.

Trade for Good

Trade for Good was set up in 2020 by Alistair Warren and Ben Galamaga. The co-founders wanted to offer an easy-to-access platform to the Australian market to encourage environmentally conscious and socially responsible investment. Rather than pocketing the trading fee, they allow customers to nominate a charity of their choice and donate 50% of the trading fee.

Congratulations to World Champions Team Hydron

There is no denying Formula 1 is intensive on the environment. The calculated footprint in 2019 was 256,511 tonnes of CO2e. The current report and recent departure of driver Sebastian Vettel due to climate concerns, demonstrates the industry is understanding that climate action and innovation is necessity if the sport is to continue. The team at Hydron contacted us prior to the competition to find out about calculating and offsetting their footprint.

Good COP, Bad COP

COP meetings are now held annually rather than every five years to work on closing the gap. Pressure is on to increase targets by 2022; to ensure they are more operational and less declaration-driven than before. The world’s two largest emitters, the USA and China, have agreed to reduce emissions collaboratively.

Wainwright Facades

“When I saw that Carbon Positive Australia had planted 5.5 million trees since 2001, it really had an impact on me! I wanted to work with Carbon Positive and hopefully in years to come be part of an even bigger statistic. We donate 100 trees per month and, in many cases, our clients match this. Over 2020 we have supported the planting of 2617 trees. The staff have also got behind this program and are making a monthly donation through workplace giving.”

Enjo

“We looked both far and near to find an organisation with who we were comfortable to work and whose values align with ours. It was also important for us to be affiliated with a company that does all its work here in Australia. We wanted to know what was going to happen with our contribution toward planting trees and to see how well they will be nurtured until they have taken literally taken roots. It was not about looking for the cheapest way of planting trees, but for the most value-added to our Australian environment. “
